The Heartleaf Philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum) is a popular, low-maintenance vining plant known for its glossy, heart-shaped, solid green leaves. It is perfect for adding a lush, tropical feel to any space and makes a fantastic addition to bioactive setups for terrariums, vivariums, or paludariums due to its easy-care nature and ability to thrive in various conditions.

Care Instructions

LIGHT. Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light levels. However, its growth may slow, and the leaves might lose some of their vibrancy in low light. In a bioactive setup, place it near a light source but avoid direct sunlight, which could scorch the leaves.

SOIL. A well-draining, loose soil mix is ideal. A blend of coconut coir, perlite, and orchid bark will help maintain aeration and proper drainage, which is essential for healthy root growth. In a bioactive environment, this mix will also allow decomposers like isopods and springtails to thrive by breaking down organic matter and enriching the substrate.

WATERING. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Let the top 1-2 inches dry out between waterings. In bioactive setups, the decomposers (springtails and isopods) will help balance moisture levels by consuming excess organic matter, which helps prevent over-watering. Avoid leaving the soil overly wet for extended periods.

HUMIDITY. Being a tropical plant, the Heartleaf Philodendron thrives in high humidity, making it ideal for bioactive setups. Aim to keep humidity levels above 60% to encourage healthy, lush growth.

TEMPS. Prefers warm temperatures between 65°F and 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Avoid placing it in drafty areas or areas with cold temperatures to prevent stress.

FERTILIZATION. During the growing season (spring and summer), feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks. You can also use our dissolvable Mealworm Frass, produced by our mealworm colonies and enriched with a variety of vegetation, as a nutrient-pumped fertilizer. In the winter, reduce feeding as growth slows down.

Cohabitation with Bioactive Organisms

ISOPODS. Isopods are ideal for a Heartleaf Philodendron setup. These decomposers will break down dead plant matter, fallen leaves, and uneaten food, helping to maintain soil health and nutrient levels. The plant also benefits from the organic material provided by the isopods.

SPRINGTAILS. Springtails are great companions for Heartleaf Philodendron in bioactive setups. They help maintain soil health by consuming mold, fungi, and decaying organic matter. Their constant activity helps keep the environment clean while benefiting the plant by breaking down organic matter into nutrients.

Soil and Maintenance Tips

SUBSTRATE. A loose, well-draining mix is crucial. Use a combination of coconut coir, orchid bark, and perlite to allow for root aeration while ensuring that decomposers have the proper environment to thrive. You can also add a layer of activated charcoal at the bottom for better filtration and odor control.

HUMIDITY CONTROL. If needed, increase humidity by incorporating a shallow water dish or misting lightly once a day. The springtails and isopods will help keep the soil moist, and your plant will benefit from the additional humidity.

TRIMMING. Heartleaf Philodendron grows quickly and can be easily trimmed to maintain a neat appearance or encourage fuller growth. Periodically trim the vines to keep them in shape. You can propagate cuttings in water or soil, which is a great way to expand your collection.

PEST CONTROL. This plant is generally pest-resistant, but in a bioactive environment, springtails and isopods will help control minor pests such as mealybugs or aphids by feeding on their eggs or larvae.

With its vibrant, glossy, heart-shaped leaves, the Heartleaf Philodendron is a beautiful and resilient addition to any bioactive setup. It thrives alongside decomposers like isopods and springtails, which contribute to a healthy, nutrient-pumped environment. By mimicking its tropical habitat with proper humidity, light, and well-draining soil, you’ll create a thriving ecosystem where both your plants and bioactive creatures can flourish.

Very well written, great coping ideas for toddlers!
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
A little backstory - my son hits. It’s not like aggressive but he is 19 months and tends to use his hands when he is frustrated. That being said I am genuinely impressed with this book. It seems long but it’s not. It’s a good length but my toddler was able to sit through the whole thing. It has plenty of pictures for each coping skill, making it one skill per page. My son seemed to really be paying attention and absorbing the book. The author did well putting things in simpler terms while also continuing to repeat why hitting is bad. The author describes many different ways why hitting hurts, makes people sad, hurts them physically and mentally. It’s all inclusive, different kids that all look different. That was a bonus for me. I love books who acknowledge us all. It teaches our children to do the same. Pages are sturdy, they are paper not that waxy laminated material. But they’re thick and the book is structured well. Books are such an important part of children’s development and vocabulary. My son has learned a whole new vocabulary. This book has helped him put faces, pictures to his feelings. It has made those feelings real and seen. Sign me up for all the books like this!

Decent book with good techniques for kids
Format: Paperback
Cute book that my two and a half year old will reach for every now and then. She'll try mimicking what they're doing, like clenching her fists and blowing bubbles, while she reads it. However, she doesn't really use the techniques when she is mad and just telling her "we don't hit when we're mad" and "we don't hit our friends/mama/daddy/etc" has been more effective. But maybe when she's older this will help if she starts hitting again.

Perfect aged book
Format: Paperback
I truly liked this book for our son when he was 3 years old. It was done very simple and to the point. It allowed you as a parent to add on if you wanted and to talk about the pages. This was a very helpful book in our house.

Engaging & Effective for toddlers w/Autism!
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
My almost 3 year old was recently diagnosed with Autism. He struggles with transitions and also has a speech delay, which often contributes to big meltdowns when he doesn’t get his way. He’s been a “hitter” since about 18M… and it’s so hard! I know he has big emotions and can’t regulate them easily. This book is FANTASTIC! It’s easy to read and has cute and relatable illustrations. It can be a little repetitive, but that’s what helps get the point across. Let’s face it, my son is also very repetitive, so it seems to resonate with him. It talks about different feelings and emotions, how it’s ok to feel that way, and how to handle them without hitting. For example, you can use your words to ask a grownup for help; you can draw an angry picture; you can squeeze your hands into a ball and release them, etc. There’s different options for different scenarios, and each one is described in a way that toddlers can figure out how to do it themselves. His favorite is to squeeze his hands into a fist, or give his body a big “squeeze hug.” I’ve already caught him doing that a few times instead of slapping me! It’ll take practice (like the book mentions) but I think he’ll be able to self-regulate better with some of these ideas!! I also have some new phrases to use and picked up some sign language. I love the tips for caregivers in the back! If you have a hitter (especially one on the spectrum), you need this! I actually like it better than our other book, Hands Are Not for Hitting. Similar story line, but this one is more detailed and better suited for older toddlers. I highly recommend it!! Hope this helps ☺️
