Pineapple Guava Uses in Phoenix Landscapes

Edible Landscape Centerpiece

Pineapple Guava is the ultimate dual-purpose tree for Phoenix homeowners who want beauty and harvest. The sweet, aromatic fruit tastes like a blend of pineapple, guava, and mint — perfect fresh, in smoothies, or in preserves. Plant two trees for cross-pollination and maximum fruit production, spacing them 10–15 feet apart. Even the flowers are edible, with a sweet tropical flavor.

Evergreen Privacy Screen

With its dense, year-round foliage, Pineapple Guava makes an excellent privacy hedge or screen. Plant 6–8 feet apart for a solid screen that reaches 15–20 feet. The silvery-green leaves provide a unique texture that stands out from typical hedging plants. It responds well to pruning and can be shaped as needed. Pair with lower shrubs like Texas Sage from Three Timbers for full coverage.

Ornamental Accent and Patio Tree

The combination of silvery foliage, showy spring flowers, and attractive bark makes Pineapple Guava a standout ornamental specimen. Plant it near a patio in Gilbert, as a focal point in a courtyard in Tempe, or flanking an entryway in Peoria. It works beautifully in both desert-modern and Mediterranean-style landscapes.

Best Time to Plant Pineapple Guava in Phoenix

Fall (October–November) is the ideal planting window. Warm soil encourages root development while cooler air reduces transplant stress, giving the tree 6–8 months of establishment before its first Phoenix summer. Spring (February–April) is the second-best window. Avoid planting during peak summer heat.

How to Plant Pineapple Guava

  1. Dig wide, not deep — excavate a hole 2–3× the width of the root ball, same depth as the root ball. The root flare should sit at or slightly above grade.
  2. Check for caliche — break through any hardpan layer to ensure proper drainage.
  3. Backfill with native soil — a light 20% organic amendment helps but isn't required.
  4. Spacing — 10–15 feet apart for fruit production (cross-pollination); 6–8 feet for a hedge.
  5. Build a water basin — create a 3–4 inch berm ring around the root zone to direct irrigation water to the roots.
  6. Mulch — spread 2–3 inches of bark or gravel mulch over the root zone (not touching the trunk) to retain moisture.

Watering Pineapple Guava in Phoenix

First Year Watering Schedule

Weeks 1–2: Water every 1–2 days, deep and slow (20–30 minutes). Month 1–2: Reduce to every 3–4 days. Month 3–6: Water every 5–7 days (every 3–5 days during peak summer). After Year 1: Water every 7–10 days in summer and every 2–3 weeks in winter. For best fruit production, maintain consistent deep watering during the fruiting period (late summer through fall).

Drip Irrigation Tips

Place emitters 12–18 inches from the trunk for new plantings, moving outward as the canopy grows. Use 2–4 GPH emitters with 2–3 emitters per tree. Consistent moisture during flowering and fruiting improves both yield and flavor.

How fast does Pineapple Guava grow in Phoenix?
Pineapple Guava grows at a moderate rate of 1–2 feet per year in Phoenix. Most trees begin producing fruit within 3–4 years of planting. It reaches functional screening height (10–15 feet) within 5–6 years.

When does Pineapple Guava fruit ripen in Phoenix?
In the Phoenix Valley, Pineapple Guava typically blooms in April–May and fruit ripens from October through November. Ripe fruit falls from the tree when ready — simply pick it up off the ground. The fruit is best eaten within a few days of harvest.

Does Pineapple Guava need a pollinator?
While Pineapple Guava can self-pollinate to some degree, fruit production improves significantly with cross-pollination from a second tree. Plant two trees 10–15 feet apart for the best harvest.

Can Pineapple Guava handle Phoenix summer heat?
Yes. Pineapple Guava handles temperatures above 110°F and tolerates reflected heat well. In extreme exposures, it benefits from afternoon shade but doesn't require it. It's one of the toughest edible evergreen trees for the low desert.

How Many Pineapple Guava Do I Need?

This larger Pineapple Guava form matures to 15 to 25 feet wide, so spacing depends on the goal. For a tall evergreen privacy screen, set plants about 6 to 8 feet apart so they grow together into a solid wall. As a fruiting orchard pair or a standalone specimen, give each tree 10 to 15 feet of clearance and plant at least two for cross-pollination.

Pineapple Guava Season-by-Season in Phoenix

  • Spring (Feb–Apr): White-and-red edible flowers open April into May, drawing pollinators, while silvery new growth flushes. A solid second planting window.
  • Summer (May–Sep): Tolerates temperatures above 110°F and reflected heat while holding its evergreen foliage. Keep moisture steady through fruit set; light afternoon shade in the harshest reflected-heat spots keeps leaves crisp.
  • Fall (Oct–Nov): Harvest season. Sweet pineapple-mint fruit ripens and drops to the ground for easy picking. Prime planting season.
  • Winter (Dec–Jan): Evergreen and reliably cold-hardy in the Valley, tolerating lows around 15°F without protection.

Plant It With

  • Fig Tree: another heat-tough Phoenix producer to build out a backyard orchard.
  • Pomegranate: drought-loving fruit tree with ornamental fall color and fruit.
  • Improved Meyer Lemon: a compact citrus that adds year-round fruit near a patio.
  • Texas Sage: a low evergreen shrub that underplants the screen for full ground-to-canopy coverage.

Is Pineapple Guava Right for Your Yard?

This Pineapple Guava thrives in full sun to light afternoon shade, in well-draining or amended caliche and alkaline soil, and is equally at home as a 15 to 25 foot evergreen screen or a fruiting specimen. It is one of the most cold-hardy and pest-free edibles for the low desert. It is not the best fit for a tight courtyard where its full width cannot develop, or right beside a pool, since it drops fruit each fall.

Good quality office chair with movable arms
Color: Dark, Color: Dark
This chair was relatively easy to put together. After unboxing and laying out all of the parts, my husband and I built it in 22 minutes. We noticed how the instructions have you put the tilt mechanism bracket on after putting the back and arms on. Another chair we built was the opposite, which made attaching it to the base actually easier. That way just made more sense. This way, you put the back and seat together using the arms, then you attach the tilt mechanism to the bottom of the seat, but the seat is at an angle when you do this. Then you lift the whole chair and place it down onto the legs. I'm glad there were two of us to do that part. We also noticed one of the holes for screwing in the arm bracket was not lined in metal like the rest of them were. It still worked, though. It does rock a bit back and forth. The height adjusting rod also locks the chair in place for when you don't want the chair to lean back. There is a knob underneath that allows you to loosen or tighten how much it moves when you lean back or rock. The material is faux leather. It looks like real leather and feels pretty good. This makes it easy to clean. The arms can be raised level with the back of the chair to make it easy to slide out of the side of the chair. Overall this chair has a pretty classic look to it and is comfortable to sit in. It even has some lumbar support. The way the back of the chair and the seat of the chair connect together leaves a little bit of a gap. Nothing major, but you could lose coins or keys through the gaps between the cushions. If you have a cat, this would be a great way for them to poke their paws through and say hello.

EXCELLENT choice for the money!!!
Color: White, Number of Items: 1
I have never written a chair review, however; I feel this product warrants it. I got this chair to replace an old chair in my studio. I scoured Amazon for hours to find it, and I am glad that I took the time to do so! I was worried about material quality and durability at this price point, but my expectations were FAR exceeded. The piece goes together with a quickness (for me, under 10 minutes), and I only glanced at the instructions once. Suffice to say, setup is simple and intuitive. Once the chair is together, there is a slight amount of play where the base plate attaches to the shaft, however it isn't a ridiculous amount. I only noticed as I was examining it and being critical after my initial excitement. The materials used are very good, and much better than you would likely get from other chairs at this price. The chrome finish is nice, and the chair PU is uniform color with no defects. One really nice feature are the zippered arm rest covers; when they get dirty, which (being white) they eventually will, you can unzip them, lay them flat, and clean them laid out, as opposed to struggling to scrub around 90 degree angles. I am sure this was easier for the manufacturer, but the end result helps the end user as well. Good on them for that. Another thing I am very happy with is the height; I am 6'4" in bare feet, and my wife is 5'0". We both fit comfortably after adjusting. They definitely got the seat height right. And to that point (of size), at my height, and 260 pounds, there is plenty of room at the sides. Mind you, however, I am fit. That is not to say that a 5'10" guy that is 260 will find it comfortable. He may not. That said, most people should fit in this without an issue. The casters had a positive snapping-in, and roll over my low carpet easily. This chair is definitely well built, save for the slight play mentioned earlier. In no way does that detract from it at all. The aesthetic fits my studio perfectly, and in all, I would not hesitate to recommend this chair. If I have any issues with it, I will post an update review, but so far so good. I really love it. If you like the way it looks, pull the trigger. It is definitely worth the price, and more.

A great choice at affordable price
Color: White, Number of Items: 1, Color: White, Number of Items: 1
The design of the chair is sleek and nice looking at a very affordable price and a decent quality. It is the cheaper version of a more expensive one. The wheels move easily; the back of the chair tilts just enough; it is a deep chair to support my back (only 5"3), so I added a back pillow making perfectly comfortable to provide support needed for long period of times. If I have a negative comment, it is about the back of the chair being black so purely matter of esthetic.: and armrests narrower than I'd like and wrapped with 2 pieces of leather connected with a piece of fabric a bit loose with a zipper which will allow overtime to be completely removed and left with chrome completely if wearing out or simply if you prefer that look so options. A great purchase

Great looking chair, a bit hard, fantastic value!
Color: White, Number of Items: 1, Color: White, Number of Items: 1
3 for comfort, 5+ for looks and 5 for ease of putting together so I landed on a 4+. I absolutely love the way this chair looks and it accents my other darker office items well. I'm 5'4" and can sit in the chair, all the way back without a pillow so the size works well for me. The back support is fine and you can adjust it if you want it straighter or rock back & forth. I changed out the casters for a more rollerblade type wheel when so I can't speak to the rollability of the included casters, but works well with the wheels I installed. Fantastic value and I'm soo glad I purchased it!
