Valerian is a tall and lush herbaceous perennial, native to Europe and Northern Asia. It has been used for medicine for ages, including in Celtic tradition. In medieval times it was called “all heal”.

Valerian root is a mild sedative, and is used to treat insomnia. The root can be made into a tea or a tincture. If using for medicine, cut off the flowers as soon as they appear to allow the root to grow to its full potential. (If growing out for seed, let the flowers bloom of course). Harvest the root in the autumn of the second growing year. Valerian combines especially well with St. John's wort, making a nice remedy for anxiety.

Valerian enjoys full sun to partial shade and is an easygoing plant that adapts well to a wide range of conditions. Throughout the summer from its second year onward, Valerian has white flowers with a tinge of light pink on stalks five feet tall, attracting many pollinators. Hardy zones 4 to 8.

Planting / harvesting notes

Sow seeds and firmly tamp them into the surface of your potting soil (they require light for germination). Keep evenly moist until germination. After the emergence of true leaves, up-pot the seedlings into larger pots. Transplant after hardening-off the seedlings, 1-2 feet apart. Roots are dug in the fall of the second year when leaves begin to turn yellow and die back.

Room Divider That Gives Instant “This Is a Separate Space Now” Energy

The Siebwin 3 Panel Folding Privacy Screen is surprisingly effective at changing the feel of a room without requiring construction, commitment, or somebody yelling about load bearing walls. The 12 foot width gives a substantial amount of coverage, making it useful for creating privacy, dividing open areas, blocking visual clutter, or setting up temporary sections within larger rooms. This saved us a ton of time and money in our new studio and enabled us to create a kitchen and office in one room. The wider feet make a huge difference because flimsy room dividers that collapse every time someone exhales too aggressively are deeply annoying. It's 2 panels holding 1 big privacy screen. Can't use as 2 separate 4' panels, but works great.

This 2 panel privacy screen works well. Assembly was very straight forward, with easily labeled tubes. My son and I had it together in about 10 minutes, which was probably 3 minutes of me telling him to quit playing around and hand me the parts. It feels very sturdy, not likely to fall over or anything. The material fits well, with the Velcro being very strong. Measurements are all very accurate, with all pieces attaching properly. We have a similar privacy screen at work that we have to try and stretch out because the top and bottom Velcro doesn't fit quite right... this model does not have any issues though. The material is thin and light weight, but solid black so that you can't see anything through or behind it. I definitely think it's a great deal for the money. What I think would have given it 5 stars though, is if you had 2 totally separate 4' panels instead of 2 panels with one big screen. It really wouldn't cost any extra to make it so that the screen was in 2 pieces and you could use it as 2 separate panels instead of having to use it as one big panel. It says 2 panel folding privacy screens, but it's really one big one that folds in the middle.

I got the Rose Home 6 panel room divider folding privacy screen and I LOVE it. I use it every day - extending it out to both block the sun, provide a backdrop for my plant wall, use as a backdrop for zoom calls, create privacy at night in front of the big windows and clear doors, and make impromptu study privacy walls in the office. This 6-panel has been the GOAT! Even though the screen is made of a woven paper material, it is still going strong despite daily use and has NOT broken anywhere. The frame is taller than other folding screens I've purchased and this one is also heavier and sturdy. Additionally the hinges fold open in BOTH directions (some screens only fold open in 1 direction like a Z). I use the folding screens indoors, but they have no issue with the AC or fans for wind resistance indoors. Sometimes I use them to hide storage or junk in the corner and make the room look neater. I also have a different brand that is the same material but has 8 panels and I love them both. I got 2 others that were made from synthetic canvas webbing belt/leash fabric and those break so fast - I just had to throw 1 away. This one is worth the money, even after daily use, it looks brand new!
