The Benne sesame has a heritage just as rich as it's flavor, becoming a staple flavoring during the 19th century, especially in the South. Growing from 3 feet up to 6 feet tall with beautiful white flowers, Benne sesame is sure to stand out in your Garden. This seed was successfully grown in the Midwest, producing a bounty of sesame in one season!

Sow in flats 2 weeks before last frost date and transplant once threat of frost has passed. Sow seeds 1/4" below growing medium. Benne is quite drought hardy and tolerates marginal soils. This variety may grow quite tall, reaching 6ft or more. As such, it is likely that it will require staking for extra stability to prevent lodging. Abundant successive blooms form pods filled with sesame seeds which can be eaten raw or toasted. Pods are ready to harvest when they begin to turn brown and dry down. Allow to dry completely on the plant if weather allows, but if rain is in the forecast consider harvesting any time after that attachment to the stem has dried, and finish drying the pod on a screen or counter inside with plenty of airflow.

Seed Source Information:

Lot # CE-OG-1067-2023: Grown by Cody Egan in Mabel, MN in 2023. Certified Organic. Tested at 93% in January 2026.

Gorgeous book
Format: Board book
This is one of our favorite books. The illustrations are stunning. It's a total work of art! And the story about changing seasons is lovely. I like that it's a quick read but that there's more than a word or two per page. My 13-month old really loves this book, and because I love it so much too, I always encourage her to bring it over for a read!

beautiful illustrations
Format: Board book
The story is nice, but the real magic is in the illustrations. As a parent, I adore reading this book just for the illustrations; each page is a work of art. Most of the story is about winter, so we are reading it a great deal now (December) to discuss wildlife and how they prepare for winter.

Another classic by Il Sung Na
Format: Board book
Il Sung Na is one of my favorite children's book authors/illustrators. The illustrations are whimsical and fun, the text is simple and colorful. This book is very similar in concept to his Book of Sleep as it chronicles a rabbit looking on as various animals respond to the changing seasons. My daughter loves this book, as well as the Book of Sleep and Opposite Zoo.
