Pampas Grass 'White Plume' – Iconic, Architectural, Classic

Cortaderia selloana 'White Plume' is the quintessential pampas grass — and there is a very good reason it has been a garden classic for decades. Those enormous, pure white, silvery-cream plumes on tall arching stems are one of the most dramatic and recognisable sights in a late summer garden. Bold, structural, and genuinely impressive, this is a plant that creates genuine impact.

Plant Personality & Aesthetic Appeal

'White Plume' produces the classic pampas grass silhouette: a wide, arching mound of long, narrow silver-green blades topped by tall stems carrying huge, silky, pure white to creamy feathery plumes. The plumes can reach 30 to 40 cm in length and catch light in a way that makes them glow almost luminously in late afternoon sun. The effect is both wild and elegant — architectural enough to anchor a large border, naturalistic enough to work in meadow-inspired schemes. It has that rare quality of looking equally good in a formal garden setting and a relaxed, informal one.

Growth Habit & Size Potential

Full-grown 'White Plume' is a large plant, reaching 1.5 to 2 m with plumes from its third or fourth year onward. Supplied at 20 cm in a 9 cm pot, it is a young plant ready to establish and grow. Plant where it has space to express itself — at the back of a large border, as an island specimen, or in a very large container. The foliage mound will widen to 1 to 1.5 m and should not be planted where it will be cramped.

Light & Location Needs

Full sun and open aspect are non-negotiable for great plume production. Plant in the sunniest available spot with good air circulation. 'White Plume' tolerates wind and exposed positions and actually prefers them — closed, humid spots can cause the centre of the clump to rot over time. Well-drained soil is important; it handles drought far better than waterlogging.

Care Level & Maintenance Tips

The annual maintenance task is cutting back old foliage in late winter before new growth starts. Wear thick gloves — the leaf blades are sharp along the margins. The plumes dry beautifully and are one of the most popular materials for dried indoor arrangements, so harvest them before the weather turns them soggy. Water young plants regularly while establishing. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser. Mature plants are very drought tolerant and largely self-sufficient.

Pampas Grass 'White Plume': A Classic for Good Reason

Some plants earn their status the hard way, through decades of consistent performance in gardens across the UK. Cortaderia 'White Plume' is one of them. The sight of those enormous silvery-white plumes swaying in a late summer breeze is genuinely arresting, and the structural presence of the plant even outside of plume season adds real backbone to large gardens. It is a classic because it is, simply, excellent.

Why You'll Love Pampas Grass 'White Plume'

  • The Classic Look: Pure white, feathery plumes are one of the most iconic garden sights.
  • Structural Year-Round: The arching silver-green foliage adds form to the garden even without plumes.
  • Brilliant for Drying: Harvest plumes for long-lasting dried indoor arrangements.
  • Very Tough Once Established: Drought tolerant, wind tolerant, and long-lived.
  • Impactful Specimen Plant: Works as a garden focal point or back-of-border anchor.

A Garden Classic That Earns Its Place Every Year

If you want structure, drama, and a garden moment that people remember, Cortaderia selloana 'White Plume' delivers all three. Give it space, give it sun, and give it a few seasons to build up to its full, spectacular potential.

Pen holder feature isn't good
Color: Cocoa
Edited review: previously I gave this a two-star review because when I inserted the pen into the pen holder the wallet couldn't close anymore... I tried taking it out putting it back in a few times and it seemed obvious to me that something was wrong and I just could not figure out why the wallet possibly was having an issue closing even though it's designed to hold a pen... To me it seemed obvious that when inserting the pen you should have the clip on the inside where are the bills go.... That single millimeter of space that that clip takes up in the bill fold causes the wallet to not be able to close properly so it springs open. Needless to say that felt extremely cheap for a product of this price and I was very unhappy and considering a return and after writing a bad review I happen to see product pictures with the clip on the inside of the wallet where your cards go and it dawned on me that I had just simply put the pen in in the wrong orientation. That completely solves the issue. So updated back to five stars, and the wallet is great. 2n update after using it for a week on an international trip so I was carrying my passport. Worked great - made me feel safe to always have my passport and room for all my most important documents inside a -just- large enough for a passport wallet. I really don't think they could have saved another millimeter and still made such a quality wallet. Having a micro pen in there is icing on the cake - makes you feel like James bond. I also felt safer having a hidden bill compartment so your not showing a fat stack of foreign currency (I mean depends on your use case but I was in some rather poor areas and this added some peace of mind and 'security' in my opinion). You can just keep some small bills up front and your real stack on the hidden flap. I won't dock a star for it - but keeping this on a back pocket so you're sitting on it because it's bigger and the way it holds cards after just one week there's already card imprints on the leather (just imagine your older leather wallets where the cards start wearing through the leather) Also I tested the RFD blocking and it indeed works. I'm unable to scan any cards through the wallet and that was an important feature to me. Even when the wallet is open and I ran scanners directly over cards (in the sleeves) it still didn't pick anything up.

Works
Color: Cocoa
Good wallet that can fit a passport, hold cash, and cards. “Hidden” pockets too, but that just means more storage space to me. Soft and supple leather that gets better when conditioned and cared for properly. Main feature I like is the RFID blocking, I only get wallets that have it. Expensive- yes. Works, also yes.

Really bad amazon customer service
Color: Black
The wallet seems great but the box it came in wasn't sealed. It was supposed to arrive by the 22nd and it arrived 4 days later. I needed it for a trip on the 1st. When I took it out, the wallet had two scratches at the back and the pen was also scratched. I contacted customer service and they couldn't help me in any way to get the replacement item before my departure date. I kept it anyways because of thr necessity. Gave it 3 stars because of the good quality of the wallet

Great Wallet
I'm pretty particular when it comes to things that I need to carry at all times when I'm out. When looking for a new wallet back in 2014, I initially went with the oft recommended Saddleback Leather Medium Bifold. Initially, that wallet seemed to be both durable and well made. Unfortunately, after several months in the back pocket, two things became clear: first, the leather was so taught that it was breaking my credit cards in half at the pinch point of the credit card slot. Second, what I took for durability in the thickness of the leather quickly turned into nuisance as I ended up with an inch thick brick that ruined my seating comfort. I called Saddleback regarding the first point and they told me that it was a known issue and if I didn't like it I could send the wallet back, which I did. That left me at a crossroads with a new requirement: I wanted a leather wallet that was thin enough to not be uncomfortable, held 6 credit/id cards and a handful of bills. I searched around until I came across Bellroy. The travel wallet seemed to check all the boxes and added some features I never knew I needed. After 6 years of use, I finally decided that the original travel wallet I bought in 2014 had run its useful life, down to holes in the leather and all. I liked it so much, I bought another one. There are some subtle differences which I will highlight below. 1. Fits in Your Pocket This is ostensibly the best feature of the wallet. It is large in the two dimensions you shouldn't care about and thin where it counts. I have not found a pair of pants that I would wear that it doesn't fit in. With my passport, 6 credit/id cards, and a dozen bills it is roughly 3/4 inches thick. Fabulous. 2. The Right Pen I had no idea how useful the pen would be. I find occasion to pull it out at least once a week. I used to carry the wonderful Fisher Space Pen, but no longer do as this fills the role in a much for optimized way. Bellroy is kind enough to include an ink refill with every wallet and I still have the refill from 2014. That's not to delegitimize the previous point; the kind of things I write are forms and other short memos. I wouldn't use the pen to write a novel. The new wallet looks to have a pen that Bellroy have either white labelled or made themselves. I haven't yet written with it, but if it is at least as good as the Walkie it replaced, things should be fine. 3. Added Security The new wallet takes the split billfold and adds a flap that conveniently hides away the back section from prying eyes. In theory this seems like a useful feature. In practice, the flap is not quite long enough to allow for more than one or two bills without the cavity being visible when the wallet is opened. The new wallet also has RFID shielding which I don't recall being a feature of the old wallet. It sounds like a useful feature now that at least one of my credit cards has a contactless payment feature. 4. Leather It's a thin wallet so you should expect the leather to be thin as well. I got 6 years out of the first wallet and I'm not a guy who is easy on wallets. It has been in my pocket on rooftops doing solar installations, in machine shops, and on every kind of seat imaginable. My old wallet has been fully submerged in water more than once. With all that punishment, it outlasted the warranty by two times. None of the stitching has failed and the only real damage is two small holes in the outer leatherwork. If you are a business traveler, this should go out of style before it is rendered unusable from wear. In short, this is a great wallet for everyday use. I approve to the extent that I didn't look for a new choice when my old one wore out.

Very handy
Color: Sienna
I purchased it because I still use paper boarding passes. With luggage claim paper, your passport and ID card, things could get quite messy if you try to put everything in your bag or backpack’s compartment. This one organizes all those nicely. Because of its size it accommodates multiple boarding passes and luggage claim papers easily. (They used to get crumpled in international flights, and It annoyed me.). Yet it is compact enough to carry in your pocket. One negative is its price. It is expensive. But it is a quality product. Nice leather and well made. If you are willing to spend some $, this will spare you from searching your boarding pass and passport frantically at boarding. Highly recommend.
