Tradescantia pallida 'Purple Heart' (Tradescantia pallida 'Purple Heart', syn. Setcreasea pallida 'Purple Heart') is one of the most boldly and uniformly colored foliage plants available in the ornamental garden — a vigorous, trailing to mounding succulent-like perennial whose elongated, lance-shaped leaves are saturated in a deep, rich, velvety purple-violet from the very moment they unfurl, maintaining their intense jewel-toned color with remarkable consistency from stem tip to stem base throughout the entire growing season. Unlike variegated foliage plants that rely on intricate patterning for visual impact, 'Purple Heart' commands attention through pure, saturated color — a bold, uncompromising deep purple that functions as one of the most powerful and versatile foliage anchors available in the warm-season ornamental garden. Small, pale pink flowers appear periodically as a delicate secondary accent that complements the dominant foliage display without competing with it for attention.

This professional-grade 4" plant arrives with a healthy, well-established root system cultivated through professional horticultural practices — ready to establish and spread into its characteristic trailing, freely branching habit. 'Purple Heart' excels as a bold foliage accent in mixed borders, hanging baskets, and large patio containers — functioning as a rich, dark anchor that makes every surrounding color appear more vivid and saturated by contrast. It is particularly striking combined with chartreuse, lime-green, or golden-yellow companions, silver foliage plants, and vivid orange or hot pink flowers for high-contrast, designer-level color combinations of real visual energy and sophistication.

  • Intensely Saturated Deep Purple Foliage: Long, lance-shaped leaves in a rich, velvety deep purple-violet of extraordinary color intensity and consistency provide one of the boldest and most uniformly saturated foliage color statements in the warm-season ornamental garden — a powerful, versatile anchor for high-contrast mixed planting compositions of any scale.
  • Extraordinary Design Versatility: The rich deep purple tone functions simultaneously as a dramatic focal point, a color-intensifying foil for vivid companions, and a sophisticated grounding anchor for complex mixed planting combinations — one of the most design-flexible foliage colors available in the entire warm-season ornamental palette.
  • Vigorous Trailing & Cascading Habit: Freely branching, trailing stems cascade beautifully from hanging baskets, window boxes, and container edges — creating lush, richly colored spillover that adds vertical dimension, movement, and bold color impact to patio and balcony container arrangements.
  • Heat & Drought Tolerant: Thrives in the heat of summer and tolerates dry periods with admirable resilience — a vigorous, low-maintenance foliage performer for warm-season containers, mixed borders, and sunny to lightly shaded garden positions throughout the growing season.
  • Delicate Pale Pink Flowers as Seasonal Accent: Small, three-petaled pale pink blooms appear periodically through the growing season — providing a delicate, unexpected floral accent that creates a charming, soft contrast against the deep purple foliage without competing with its bold, dominant color presence.

These 4" healthy live plants thrive in full sun to partial shade with well-drained, average soil and moderate moisture; best purple color intensity develops in full sun — shade reduces the depth and saturation of the foliage color significantly. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce to moderate supplemental irrigation. USDA Hardiness Zones 7–11; in cooler zones, grow in containers and overwinter indoors or treat as a vigorous warm-season annual. Mature height: 8–12 inches; spread: 12–24 inches. Trim back lightly in mid-season to encourage fresh, vibrantly colored new growth and a tidy, well-branched habit.

Excellent book on the Campaign!
Format: Hardcover
I highly recommend this book! I have read many books on the Guadalcanal Campaign and I rate this one at the top. It has just the right blend of stragity and personal accounts to keep the story interesting. It is actually a real page-turner, which is rare for a non-fiction work. Wheelan writes in a style that reminds me of the books I read in my teens by Cornelius Ryan and John Toland, which captured my interest in WWII and history. The book jumps right into the invasion, no multiple chapters concerning the planning and build up, but this info is covered later. All phases of this campaign are covered; ground, air and sea. The maps are okay. There are never enough. The author skims over much of the U. S. Army battles after the Marines are relieved, but that seems to be a trend in all of the books on Guadalcanal that I have read. Overall, this is an excellent book for those who want to learn about the campaign and those who need a re-fresher after reading Starvation Island and Guadalcanal by Frank in years past.

Most complete coverage of Guadalcanal I have read.
Format: Kindle
I have read dozens of WWII books and many touched on the Guadalcanal Battle. I thoroughly enjoyed The Big E and its involvement in the battle. Thas book covered the entire conflict from start to finish. Frankly, I hated to see the book end. The courage and tenacity of all those involved was amazing. To understand the miserable conditions in the area where these men fought was inspiring. To see this battle through the eyes of the American forces and Japanese forces was an added bonus. Thank you for a great read!!!

Shines a light on the reality of the War in the Pacific
Format: Audiobook
Well-written and it really laid out all of the details of how this battle unfolded. I listed to the audio-book, and it was helpful to have the PDF to see a map. How the soldiers on each side endured the battles in the Pacific Theater is beyond me. Man's inhumanity to man that result in this battle outlined here is depressing, but also the sacrifice of those called on to endure and suffer through that inhumanity is equally inspiring and humbling to those whose lives are so comfortable in comparison.

Good book
Format: Hardcover
If Ww2 interest u at all then u want to read this book. I have read the other books on this subject ( so why read another one?) well what i luv about this book is that because so much time has passed that most all of the people in this book are gone & so much more info has been released about these battles, that the combatants ( especially the higher officers are written about as if they are human (mistakes & warts & all) & not like they were all Bull Halsey type Gods which they were certainly not as in most all the books released within the 1st 30 yrs of the war. This makes for a much different & more interesting story about these battles than even the original books on the subject. You come to understand the where & whyfores better, by knowing the real true strenghts & weakness's & fears that drove these men. Hey they are all the bravest of heroes to me. But the were not perfect, & because of this, mistakes were made, that were really not acknowledged or maybe not even known about in early books on WW2

Great structure
Format: Paperback
I had to get the book for class, so did not exactly get it because I “wanted to.” It was a good read though. I liked the structure of each section. Everything simple enough to understand while also diving a bit deeper.
