Arbequina Olive Tree Produces Delicious Fruit, Thrives in Containers, and Stays Evergreen Year-Round

Grow Your Own Flavorful Olives at Home with the Arbequina Olive Tree

  • Small, richly flavored olives with high oil content ripen in fall which are suitable for pressing and table use
  • Self-fertile and precocious, often begins fruiting within two to three years of planting.
  • Semi-dwarf, weeping canopy stays naturally compact at 15 to 20 ft., with striking ornamental appeal.
  • Remarkably cold-hardy for an olive tree, tolerating temperatures down to 10°F to 15°F.
  • Thrives in USDA hardiness zones 7-11 when grown outdoors but is popular for containers, patios with full sun

Few trees manage to be genuinely productive, legitimately beautiful, and practical enough for a home garden all at once. The Arbequina Olive (Olea europaea 'Arbequina') pulls it off without much effort. The graceful, weeping canopy draped in narrow silvery-green leaves has real ornamental presence, while the tree itself gets down to the business of producing fruit faster and more reliably than most other olives you can grow. Intrigued? Keep reading to see why you should buy the Arbequina olive online from perfect plants.

Fun Gardening Fact: Originally from the Catalonian village of Arbeca in Spain, this semi-dwarf variety has become one of the most widely planted olive cultivars in the world, and once you see one in person, it's easy to understand why

What Makes the Arbequina Olive Tree Special?

Fruit You Can Use: The small, dark olives that ripen in October and November are primarily valued for their oil — mild, buttery, and lightly fruity with none of the sharp bitterness found in more pungent varieties. With an oil content around 20 to 22%, these are legitimate pressing olives, and the fruit is edible as table olives as well. For the home grower, having a tree that produces real, usable harvests within a few years of planting is a significant part of the appeal.

Quick & Abundant Fruiting: Arbequina is one of the most precocious olive varieties available. This tree is often setting fruit within two to three years of planting, it does so with consistency year after year. The arbequina olive tree is self-pollinating. This means that they do not need another olive cultivar nearby to cross pollinate and bear fruit. A single tree will be fine on its own.

Ornamental Through Every Season. The weeping, arching branch structure gives Arbequina a sculptural quality that most fruit trees don't have. The silvery-green foliage holds year-round as an evergreen, small fragrant white flowers appear in spring, and the fruit transitions from green to deep purplish-black through the fall. It's a genuinely attractive tree across all four seasons.

Cold-Hardy for an Olive. Most olive trees are more tender than gardeners expect. Arbequina is a meaningful exception, handling temperatures down to about 10°F to 15°F — well below what most other olive cultivars can tolerate. This cold hardiness opens up a much wider range of planting zones than the typical Mediterranean olive.

Container and Patio Ready. The naturally compact size and flexible growth habit make Arbequina one of the best olive trees for large containers. Grown in a substantial pot on a sunny patio, it stays manageable, looks exceptional, and produces fruit without needing to be planted in the ground — an ideal setup for gardeners working with limited space or colder winters where portability matters.

How to Care for Your Arbequina Olive Tree

  • Plant in full sun with at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily is non-negotiable for healthy growth and good fruit production.
  • Arbequina adapts to a wide range of soil types, including alkaline and poor-quality soils, as long as drainage is good.
  • The Olea Europaea ‘Arbequina’ can grow up to 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide at full maturity. If you plan to grow more than one of them, you’ll need to leave 15 to 20 feet of space between each full-grown arbequina olive tree.
  • Water regularly through the first growing season to help the tree establish; once settled in, it handles dry spells with ease, though consistent watering through the fruiting period improves yield.

Growing Your Arbequina Olive in a Container

Container-grown olive trees need more frequent watering and benefit from an organic potting mix with proper drainage. Prune lightly to maintain shape and open up the canopy for airflow; heavy pruning is unnecessary and can reduce fruiting. Fertilize in early spring as new growth begins; our Liquid Fertilizer for Olive Trees is formulated specifically for olives and takes the guesswork out of feeding through the season

This ball is perfect for keeping my dog active and entertained. It's made of strong, durable material, ideal for games of fetch. It doesn't break easily and is light enough for him to carry in his mouth without any problem.

Great toy. Definitely worth it.
Pattern Name: Classic Squeaky Tug, Pattern Name: Classic Squeaky Tug
This is a great toy. I bought this for my dachshund, and it's still going strong after 2.5 years. The string part came off after a few months, but that's fine. This is always her go-to toy.

Perfect so far!
Pattern Name: Classic Squeaky Tug
My dog has a habit of tearing up toys in just a few minutes, so far, this toy has lasted a few days, the rope is already showing signs of wear. I wish there was a way to attach a new rope when this one goes... She is a mid-sized dog with a LOT of energy, and she's very destructive, digging, chewing on things she's not supposed to, etc. This helps with that, she can play with it for a long time, we don't have to always 'check' to see if she is tearing something up. She loves grabbing it by the rope and swinging it around the sides of her head, it doesn't hurt her, and she LOVES this toy. Out of ALL of the toys that we have bought her, and that she loved, THIS ONE has been top dog to her. We love watching her play with it, it also wears her out and she'll then take a nap, which is always good. Oh yeah, the size if PERFECT for a mid-sized to a large dog, I'm not sure about any smaller dogs. She can squeak the squeaker on it fine too, but not at first, she had to 'find out' how to do it on her own. As far as chewing it into little pieces like one person has said, I can't attest to that, and I hope that is not the case. I will return if she does end up chewing it into pieces, because she in known far and wide for that! :)

Large adult aggressive chewer? No. Puppy? Yes
Pattern Name: Classic Squeaky Tug
My large adult dog who is an aggressive chewer got this toy in pieces within minutes, BUT this is a great toy for a lighter touched dog. When I got my newest addition (Malinois mix puppy. Pls thoughts and prayers for me), this toy came to mind because she loves chewing and she’s only 11 weeks old! She needed an interesting toy that is sturdy and won’t hurt her teeth or gums, but is still interesting (the rope piece and the squeaker). She’s not nearly as rough of a chewer as my older guy YET. But when she gets bigger, she will more than likely destroy this. She is almost 20lbs at 11 weeks right now, so I will update if she does destroy it. Long story short: Not good for large aggressive chewers, good for aggressive chewers on the smaller side (maybe 15-30lbs)
