The hydrangea carries this composition. Native to Japan and the Americas and cultivated in European gardens since the eighteenth century, its name comes from the Greek for "water vessel" - a nod to its thirst and to the dense, cloud-like heads that give Calypso its softness. Here, treated to a cool turquoise, it reads like sea glass. Hydrangea is famously near-scentless, which is part of its appeal: it lends volume and colour without competing, and has long been associated with heartfelt emotion, gratitude and abundance.

Against that softness, the coral anthurium supplies the structure. A tropical native of Central and South American rainforests, its lacquered, heart-shaped spathe has a waxy, almost sculptural surface that holds light and shape for weeks. Lightly scented at most, it speaks instead through form, and is widely read as a symbol of hospitality, confidence and enduring affection - the editorial backbone of the arrangement.
