The Pencil Cactus, or Euphorbia tirucalli, is a unique and striking succulent that adds a modern, architectural element to any indoor or outdoor space. Despite its common name, it's not a true cactus but a member of the Euphorbiaceae family, which includes poinsettias and crotons. Its thin, pencil-like branches give it a distinctive look, with some varieties like 'Sticks on Fire' showcasing brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow in bright sunlight and cooler temperatures.

Important Safety Warning:

Pencil Cactus contains a milky, toxic sap that can cause severe skin irritation, a burning sensation, and temporary blindness if it comes into contact with the eyes. Always wear gloves and eye protection when handling, pruning, or repotting this plant, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Growing Tips & Requirements

1. Light and Placement

  • Indoors: This plant thrives in high light. Place it in or near a south or west-facing window where it can receive at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. A lack of light will result in leggy, weak growth.

  • Outdoors: In warmer climates (USDA Zones 10-12), it can be grown outdoors where it can reach impressive heights. It prefers full sun but can benefit from some afternoon shade in extremely hot climates to prevent scorching.

2. Water Requirements

  • Drought-Tolerant: As a succulent, the Pencil Cactus is designed to store water in its stems. Overwatering is the most common mistake and can lead to fatal root rot.

  • Frequency: Let the soil dry out completely between waterings.

    • Growing Season (Spring/Summer): Water every 2-4 weeks, or when the top 2 inches of soil are dry.

    • Dormant Season (Fall/Winter): Reduce watering significantly to once a month or even less.

  • Technique: Water deeply until water drains from the bottom of the pot. Never let the plant sit in standing water.

3. Temperature & Humidity

  • Temperature: The Pencil Cactus is a heat-loving plant. It thrives in temperatures between 60°F and 85°F (16°C and 29°C).

  • Cold Tolerance: It is not frost-tolerant. If you live in a climate where temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C), it's best to grow it in a pot that can be brought indoors during the cooler months.

  • Humidity: It tolerates low humidity well and doesn't require misting.

4. Soil Preparation

  • Drainage is Key: A well-draining soil mix is absolutely essential to prevent root rot. Standard potting soil holds too much moisture.

  • Recommended Mix: Use a pre-made cactus and succulent mix. You can also create your own by combining:

    • 1 part potting soil or compost

    • 1 part coarse sand

    • 1 part perlite or pumice

  • pH Level: It prefers a slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH range of 6 to 7.5.

5. Propagation

  • Method: The Pencil Cactus is very easy to propagate from stem cuttings.

  • Steps:

    1. Select a Cutting: Use a sharp, clean knife to cut a 6-inch section from the stem. Wear gloves to protect yourself from the sap.

    2. Callus the Cutting: Lay the cutting in a dry, shaded area for 1-2 days. This allows the cut end to form a protective scab-like layer (callus), which prevents rot once planted. This step is critical!

    3. Planting: Once calloused, plant the cutting in a well-draining soil mix. You can optionally dip the end in rooting hormone, but it's not strictly necessary.

    4. Care: Place the pot in a bright location with indirect sunlight. Water sparingly, only when the soil is completely dry, until roots have formed. This usually takes a few weeks.

Very hard
Color: 2PC-Bacon-Green
Extremely hard and heavy. So hard my dog couldn't even bite it. She can only play with it on the rug for fear she might chip or break the floor tiles.

As advertised and didn't splinter with gnawing!
Color: 2PC-Bacon-Green, Color: 2PC-Bacon-Green
This toy is definitely made for major dog toy-destroyers! The dog bones are made of a hard nylon/plastic that is very different from the standard dog toy. The toy is rigid, bumpy, and has knobs on both ends to simulate the bone shape. One of the dog toys, out of the box, had an odd black mark along one of the knobs. It did not wipe away and had a thin piece of plastic attached to it. I did cut that away to be safe, as I don't want to risk my dogs choking, even on something small. That, to me, looked like a factory default. Maybe from when it was being molded? It was only on the one, so its very possible that its just mine. Also worth noting that the toys did NOT smell strange or like plastic as many do. That was honestly pretty refreshing. It does not exaggerate about its durability. The material of the toy makes it so it cannot bend or break. I honestly think it would mess up my car tires before it would mess up the toy if I ran over it in the yard. That being said, my bigger dog did put teeth marks into it immediately. Like, the second he put it in his mouth. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, since you don't want them to chip a tooth, but it is something to make note of. The gnaw marks did not splinter, as some durable chews tend to, which is an excellent sign of a long lasting toy. The second any of our toys splinter, we take them away as they can cause a choking hazard. We have two bulldogs and they both have played with this style of hard toy before. The smaller bully, the old man, was disappointed by my present of the nylon chew. He sat at my feet pretty pathetically until I gave him an ice cube and sent him on his way. He usually enjoys the hard chews, but I think its possible he didn't like the size of this one. Though, it is surprising. Our larger bulldog, the puppy, loved it immediately. He took it from my hand and ran off with it to gnaw on for probably an hour. Then came back to grab his brother's to gnaw on too! For the price, I think its worth it, as you get two of them, and the lack of splintering is game changing.

Hana approved, gold star toy
Color: Original Pack, Color: Original Pack
This is, according to Amazon, our 11th set in 3 months. According to Hana, our shiba/chi mix, this toy is immaculate. Crunch score is a 10/10 and the squeak? Don't get her started. High pitched, easy to squeak and protected by just enough crunch and fabric that it actually lasts. In fact, she will tear the toy open before the squeaker gives up. This may seem like a small feat, however most toys last 12-30 minutes before the teefies take the squeaker out of commission. Lambchops last about 15 minutes before the squeaker gives in and fluff decorates the floor. The only reason we buy so many so often is because 1. The teefies do eventually puncture and the moment that happens she guts the poor Claw instantly. And 2. She has about 11 teefies, so the mouth gets kinda icky and due to the crunch, washing these kind of sucks- retains a lot of water and cant dry. So we replace them often even if she doesn't get to the gutting. 10/10. Its her favorite toy. And we've tested a lot of toys.

They are so soft and the details are hilarious! Just be careful because the pawcohol content is pretty high so I’m sure your dog will be feeling it after just one! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
