Variegated Japanese Laurel

Botanical Name: Aucuba japonica ‘Variegata’
Family: Garryaceae
Origin: Japan & East Asia
Plant Type: Evergreen shrub

Overview

Aucuba japonica ‘Variegata’ is a highly valued shade-tolerant foliage shrub, ideal for brightening the darker parts of Adelaide gardens. Its glossy green leaves splashed with gold variegation create instant contrast and lushness, even in deep shade where few ornamental shrubs thrive. Slow-growing, long-lived and very low-maintenance, it tolerates heat, coastal conditions and dry shade once established, making it perfect for courtyards, shaded entries, under trees and protected alfresco areas. Small purple-red flowers may appear in spring, followed by ornamental red berries on female plants when pollinated.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 1.2–2 m H × 1–1.5 m W (compact, rounded shrub)
  • Growth Rate: 15–30 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Glossy green leaves heavily speckled and splashed with golden-yellow variegation; evergreen; foliage may deepen in colour during winter
  • Flowers: Small purple-red clusters in spring; ornamental red berries on female plants if a male pollinator is present
  • Fragrance: Not considered fragrant; flowers have no notable scent and foliage is non-aromatic
  • Seasonal Interest: Year-round evergreen foliage with striking gold-variegated colour; winter foliage deepens slightly in tone
  • Wildlife Value: Flowers offer light pollinator interest; berries (if produced) attract birds
  • Tolerance: Excellent shade tolerance; heat-tolerant in shaded sites; wind-tolerant; coastal-tolerant in sheltered positions; tolerates dry shade once established; light frost-hardy; avoid harsh afternoon sun
  • Planting Density: For borders or screening: 1 plant per 1–1.5 m², or 1–1.2 m apart for a continuous line
  • Pet Friendly: Generally considered non-toxic; ingestion may cause mild stomach upset

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Best in full shade to part shade; protect from strong afternoon sun in SA
  • Soil: Moist, well-drained loam or sandy loam; tolerates improved clay; prefers organic-rich soil
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: water every 2–3 weeks in summer (weekly in heatwaves); minimal watering needed in winter
  • Maintenance: Very low. Mulch in spring; prune lightly after winter to shape; feed with slow-release fertiliser in early spring
  • Lifespan: 20–40+ years
  • Climate Zones: Suited to temperate & Mediterranean SA gardens — ideal for Adelaide Plains, foothills and coastal suburbs (with protection from strong sun)
  • Soil pH: Acid to neutral; tolerates mildly alkaline soils with organic improvement

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Bright, variegated foliage shrub for deep or dry shade
  • Underplanting beneath deciduous or evergreen trees
  • Shaded courtyards, side passages or protected alfresco areas
  • Contrast plant with dark-green shrubs or ferns
  • Foundation planting near entries or shaded walls

Why You Will Love It

Aucuba ‘Variegata’ thrives where many plants fail — in full shade, dry shade and protected coastal positions — while providing year-round colour through its striking gold-speckled foliage. Tough, elegant and incredibly low-maintenance, it’s a reliable choice for brightening shaded Adelaide garden spaces with minimal effort.

Fae Courts with High Intrigue
Format: Kindle
This book is one that just builds and builds and then surprises you to no end. You may think you know the villains and then you are jolted in another direction. Princess Reyna is a real gem, strong of character, a fierce fighter, and loyal to her family and kingdom. Just when you think she and Lorcan, well you know, the plot is flipped. Can't wait to see where this goes in book two.

Slow, sorry but good
Format: Kindle
This was a slow moving book. Lots of character pov chapters, lots of superfluous descriptions and endless courtly appearances stalled this book to start. Once you get into the heart of the story, it takes off. Before you know it the book is done. My favorite character is Reyna. She is so strong. She is true to herself. She gets into a lot of trouble with her headstrong ways but it's entertaining. I have high hopes for Lorcan. He is honorable to a fault. Thane had turned out to be better than I thought but i still don't like him. Eislin is useless. Great plot twists at the end. I'm looking forward too book 2.

Very detailed! Beautiful world building! Strong Heroine!
Format: Kindle
Starts off a little slow and confusing with different POV’s, but starts to all come together towards the middle to make an elaborate plot line and makes it all worth it. Beautiful world building and attention to detail as well as great writing. The cliffhanger was gut wrenching! Can’t wait for the next book!

Interesting
Format: Kindle
This was a very captivating book once you got into it thoroughly. But the third person perspective was a bit hard to get used to. But as you got into it and followed the different characters, it was interesting and filled with intrigue, conflict and forbidden love. I can’t wait to read the next one and to complete the series.

OUTSTANDING
Format: Kindle
This was very, very good. The world is vast and characters are complex. There is a good plot with a whole lot going on. This is well written. Good twists and turns and some heart breaking moments. You will love these characters, they have heart and loyalty. I am hoping that there will be several more books. We've yet to see anything from the Sea Court but only a mention of them here and there. The Wood Court was given a quick couple of scenes, and only as far as some warriors, we've yet to enter their court and the Shadow Court, I'm not sure if they will be a force for good or bad, but they definitely will play a much bigger role moving forward. This is primarily the Ice and Air Courts. Told in multiple views, which I loved, it gives you a chance to see things from different eyes. There's alot of political maneuvering and deception. I loved it and will pick up the next book as it becomes available. If you like The Fae and the courts, you should love this. I think the author has mucn in store for us.
